shape until the time of the Crusades. When the soldiers of the Cross came in contact with the Saracens, they found a civilization vastly superior to their own; and that great intellectual ferment which succeeded those terrible religious convulsions, leading to the revival of learning in Europe, had its roots in -Saracenic culture. Even the renaissance of the military art was born of the Crusades. One factor at least —the military band, which was no doubt copied from the Saracens,3 will claim attention here. The Hon. J. W. Fortescue tells us4 that in the Saracen army minstrels were employed to indicate a rallying point; " for although at ordinary times the standards sufficed to show men the places of their leaders, yet in the dust |
